Some institutions earn their standing slowly, over a very long time. Ciências is one of them: part of the University of Lisbon, among the world’s top 150 in natural sciences and technology. A place of real scale, with more than 5,000 students, around 500 faculty and researchers, and over 1,000 scientific papers a year, across 10 departments and 19 research units, more than 90% of them rated Excellent.
The website had to match that, and the old one did not. For an institution this broad, with so many people arriving for so many different reasons, a site cannot just look the part. Our work was to rethink it from the structure up: map how each audience moves, rebuild the navigation around them, and engineer a platform robust enough to hold more than 500 pages and keep growing.

Many audiences, one way through.
The hardest part was never the look, it was the structure. A prospective student, a researcher, an international partner, and a company eyeing the campus all arrive with different questions and almost nothing in common.
We mapped the journey for each of them and rebuilt the navigation around how people actually move through a place this broad, so everyone finds their own path fast, and no one gets lost in somebody else’s.
Built to carry it all.
Behind the pages sits a platform of real weight: more than 5000 pages, a reserved area, and content that lives across every department. We engineered it to stay fast and consistent at that scale, with a structure that holds as the faculty keeps publishing.
Because its own teams can keep it current, the site stays sharp and consistent as it grows, with no agency on call for every change.
